Only clean first solves count: fewest questions wins, ties go to fewer hints, then to time. Anyone who saw a solution first is out: fair play, always.

The four boards

Each one answers a different question, and you can be nowhere on one and first on another.

Overall
Everything you have ever solved cleanly, added up. It rewards persistence more than brilliance: the more mysteries you crack, the higher you sit. Nothing is ever removed from it.
Detective of the Month
The same rules, but only this calendar month counts, so it starts from zero for everyone on the first of each month. This is the board worth chasing if the overall one looks out of reach. It pays: 100 tokens for first place, 60 for second, 40 for third, with at least 3 clean solves to qualify.
The Mystery of the Day
One story, the same one for everybody in the world, chosen by the date itself. Because everyone is on identical ground, this is the fairest comparison on the site, and the easiest board to top, since only today’s players are on it. See today’s mystery
The Pantheon
The permanent record of each month's podium. Up to three names a month go on it and none ever comes off: a place you win is yours for good.

There is a fifth: every mystery has a board of its own. Pick one from the list above the table.

How to climb

  • Fewer questions beats faster. Time is the last thing counted, so there is no reward for rushing.
  • A hint costs you a place, not your chance. You still rank, but between two players with the same questions, fewer hints wins.
  • Never reveal the solution on a story you mean to rank on. It is the one thing that cannot be undone: that mystery is closed to you for the leaderboard for ever.
  • Start with the Mystery of the Day. The shortest way onto a board: only today’s players are standing on it.

The questions themselves are a skill. Six techniques for asking better ones

The rules, in plain words

What counts, what does not, and why somebody who played might not be here.

How is the leaderboard ranked?

Fewest questions first. Equal questions are separated by fewer hints, then by the faster time, then by whoever got there first. Thinking beats speed, by design.

Why am I not on the leaderboard?

Only clean first solves count. If the first time you met a story you revealed the solution or ran out of budget, that story can no longer rank for you. A mystery you WROTE yourself never ranks for you either, because you know the answer. Staff accounts are excluded too, so the board stays a players’ board.

I wrote a mystery. Can I play it?

You can open everything in it (hints, solution, narration, reel), and all of it free: it is your own work. What is missing is the Game Master, because you cannot guess an answer you wrote yourself, and a run would charge you tokens for nothing. You also cannot rate it, and it never counts towards the leaderboard or your badges. Everything else is untouched: your name is on the story wherever it appears, and your standing on every other mystery is exactly as it was.

What counts as a clean solve?

You solved the mystery yourself, on your first run at it, without having seen its solution beforehand. Hints are allowed; they cost you only on the tiebreak.

Can I play a mystery again?

Always, for the pleasure of it. Only your first run at a story can enter the leaderboard, so replaying changes nothing in the standings, yours or anyone else’s.

The next name up there could be yours.
