The church bell was lifted out of its tower the evening before. Even so, at three in the morning, four villagers woke to two deep bronze notes rolling over the roofs. At dawn a cyclist lay dead on the closed road below, alone, his bike folded under him. Those two notes freed the neighbour already charged with his death.
